Ukraine, Malta ink intergovernmental agreements of cooperation in combating organized crime and in tourism area

Ukraine and Malta signed intergovernmental agreements in combating organized crime and in tourism area. The instruments were signed in frames of a meeting of the delegations chaired by Ukrainian and Maltese presidents Viktor Yushchenko and Edward Fenech Adami.

The agreement on combating organized crime aims to strengthen a bilateral cooperation between the law enforcement authorities of Ukraine and Malta to prevent, detect, investigate and clean crimes particularly through the exchange of operative information and permanent contacts between the agencies concerned at all levels.

The goal of the tourism cooperation agreement is to enhance a bilateral partnership in tourism field, strengthen Ukraine's positions on the Maltese touristic market, increase financial receipts to the state budget by means of touristic exchange with Malta.

At the start of the meeting, the Ukrainian President said that in the private talks of the Heads of State a special attention was paid to the aspects of Ukraine's European integration, in particular, the matter concerned the talks on concluding a new enhanced agreement between Ukraine and the EU, further liberalization of visa regime for Ukrainian citizens, creation of a free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU. "We appreciate this and thank for absolutely clear position of Malta in backing Ukraine on the issue," Yushchenko underscored.

Apart from this, the parties dwelled on Malta's involvement in international efforts made by Ukraine to recognize Holodomor 1932-1933 as genocide of Ukrainian people.
