2.5 thousand children adopted by new families

Over the first half of 2008, the Ukrainian citizens adopted 1,010 orphans and children deprived of parents' care, another 642 children were adopted by foreign citizens, Family, Youth and Sports Ministry press service informed.

592 children have been sent to foster families, 242 - to children's homes of the family type. On the whole, 2,486 children have been adopted by new families.

According to Family, Youth and Sports Minister Yuriy Pavlenko, a ratio of national and foreign adoption of the Ukrainian children is very positive.

"By results of the first half of 2007, adoption of children by foreigners outstripped the national adoption: 893 of our children left their Motherland, and 821 - have been adopted on their native land. This year, the Year of support to the national adoption, the ratio has changed greatly. The Ukrainians adopted twofold more children against adoption of children by foreigners. These are just the indexes we are striving for, so that Ukraine stopped to be a children's donor to other countries", the minister noted.
