Jean Lemierre considers curbing inflation to be one of most urgent problems for Ukraine today

Curbing high inflation rate is the most urgent problem for Ukraine today, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Jean Lemierre told at opening of the investment forum in Kyiv today.

"Inflation is the main problem. Not only on economic but on social reasons too", he noted.

The EBRD President stated that he intends to discuss this issue with the NBU management and thinks that inflation may have noticeable negative social-economic consequences.

At the same time, Jean Lemierre noted that presently the Ukrainian economy demonstrates high growth rates and have a considerable potential. But, in his opinion, Ukraine should be ready to new challenges related to the country's accession to the World Trade Organization.

According to the EBRD President, this organization in its turn is ready to invest into projects in the spheres of energy saving, agroindustrial complex, and in other sectors, that will be implemented in Ukraine.

According to the State Statistics Committee, inflation made up 30.2 percent in Ukraine in April 2008 against April 2007 (10.5 percent in April 2007 against April 2006), 24.4 percent in January-April 2008 against the same period of 2007 (10.3 percent in January-April 2007 against January-April 2006).
