Ukraine’s ongoing political crisis cannot last too long and must be resolved as soon as possible, President Victor Yushchenko said on Thursday.
“Dear colleagues, we must find a quick response to the political crisis. You have no time for slowing down,” he said in a speech to a special group formulating amendments to the country’s laws to hold early parliamentary elections.
The Ukrainian leader said, last Friday, he and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych “reached an agreement in principle on holding the early elections.” “The snap poll constitutional term should be consistent with your position as leaders of parties and factions,” he said. “I am surprised the group is not discussing when to hold the vote, although this is your most important task.”
Yushchenko said the group was apparently “pursuing other goals.” “You have been working for five days and the deceleration of your negotiations shows that political intrigues are involved,” he said, adding that their compromise on the election date would demonstrate they have found a solution to the crisis. "This is why your group was set up."
