President meets EU Parliament President

President Victor Yushchenko met with President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pottering who came to Ukraine with the official visit.

Speaking at the meeting President Yushchenko stressed that development of Ukraine-EU relations is one of top priorities of our country’s foreign policy. “This policy for Ukraine is fundamental, strategic and priority”, - he said.

Victor Yushchenko praised development of talks between Ukraine and the EU on the Association Agreement. “Our position is that the Association Agreement would provide answers to all of our fundamental expectancies regarding integration and rapprochement of Ukraine’s and EU’s points of view”.

Also President Yushchenko expressed hope that in ten to eleven months Ukraine and the EU would approach establishment of a free trade zone.

Separately he expressed pleasure about the fact that the long talks between Ukraine and the EU on modernization of Ukraine’s gas transit system have finally been crowned with success.
Beside that Victor Yushchenko pointed to success in the talks on organization of visa regulations between Ukraine and the EU. “In June we plan to approach signature of the Roadmap on organization of the talks on visa-free travel”, - he said.

For Hans-Gert Pottering’s personal contribution in revealing truth about the Holodomor in Ukraine before global community Victor Yushchenko awarded him with the Order of Yaroslav the Wise of the II grade.

Other participants of the meeting were Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn, acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Volodymyr Khandogiy and deputy Chief of Staff Andrii Goncharuk.
