President holds consultative meeting on restoration of regions damaged by 2008 floods

In Ivano-Frankivsk President Victor Yushchenko held a consultative meeting on restoration of Vinnytsya, Zakarpattya, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Ternopil, and Chernivtsi regions after the floods that hit them between July 23 and 27, 2008.

Speaking at the meeting President Yushchenko said that the most important part of restoration works for now is rebuilding and repairing the infrastructure. According to him only two thirds of the work was done on restoring ruined and damaged roads, bridges and riverbank works.

At the same time President noted that substantial progress was made in providing families that lost their habitations in the disaster. He urged the Regional Administrations Heads to stir up satisfying citizens’ appeals for repayment of damages that still remain in order to complete that part of the restoration process.

Also President Yushchenko pointed to problems in financing of the restoration process, saying that he would like to hear reports on the subject by officials from Ministry of Finance and requesting Prosecutor Office's better supervision of spending of the issued funds and prevention of cases of their misuse.

Beside that President Yushchenko mentioned importance of introducing a new system of early warning in order to enhance communication in cases of such emergencies as in July 2008.
