During French presidency in EU, conference of donors planned to collect funds for modernization of Ukrainian gas transport system

During French presidency in the EU it is planned to carry out a conference of donors to collect funds for modernization of the Ukrainian gas transport system, French Ambassador to Ukraine Jean-Paul Veziant told a press conference today.

According to him, existence of a gas corridor between Russia and the EU that will go via the Ukrainian territory is a reality and therefore negotiations are held on allocation of funds for modernization of the gas transport system of Ukraine with the aim of raising its safety. He noted that during the French presidency in the EU he does not see any initiatives with regard to the Odesa-Brody project. In his opinion, it is necessary to start a more flexible dialogue with Russia on the energy security within nearest six months.

He considers that external relations of the EU with neighbors will be an important component and he noted that French President Nikola Sarkozi "wished that a special attention to be paid to a new agreement between Ukraine and the EU". All the EU countries advocated that too.
