Ukraine leaders delay compromise

President Victor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych have agreed to give a special group discussing how and when to hold early parliamentary elections additional time to craft the necessary legal amendments to conduct the snap poll and appoint a new election date, Security Council Secretary Ivan Plyushch and Deputy Premier Mykola Azarov told reporters on Wednesday.

“President Victor Andriyovych Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych suggested giving the working group one or two more days to reach final agreements and then announce an election date,” said Plyushch.

He said the two leaders had made such a decision because they “unanimously appreciate the huge number of problems that must be resolved.” Although the group has been working for two weeks and despite its “quite weighty” achievements, there are still some issues that cannot be settled without improving the country’s constitution and laws, he added.

Azarov said both Yushchenko and Yanukovych “have been informed about the compromises and differences within the group” and added that its members had different political views, which “impedes the process of finding compromises.”
