Ukraine celebrates VE-Day

War veterans, led by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, marched along Kiev’s main street to the music of war-time tunes as part of VE-Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Prior to that, the president, members of the government, and the heads of parliamentary factions laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Viktor Chernomyrdin and other Russian diplomats attended the ceremony.

Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich is undergoing medical treatment abroad. In his message on the occasion of VE-Day, he wrote, “We blow our heads and pay filial tribute to those who heroically traveled the long and thorny combat roads and then restored the native land from ashes after the Great Victory. There are no words that could fully reflect our gratitude for your immortal deeds in the cruelest of the wars mankind has ever known.”

He stressed, “The government recognises its responsibility for making sure that the live of veterans is worth their working and combat contribution.”
