President Yushchenko phones President Klaus of the Czech Republic

President Victor Yushchenko held phone talks with the President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus.

President Yushchenko informed his Czech colleague about the situation with transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine, namely that Russian side halted gas supplies to Ukraine for further transit to Europe on January 7, 2009 at 7.44 a.m. Kyiv time.

Victor Yushchenko emphasized that Ukraine has done everything it could to maintain transit of gas to European customers and even used some its own reserves for that.

He also invited observers from the European Commission to transfer point of Russian gas at the Ukrainian-Russian border and to main control point of OJSC ‘Ukrtransgaz'.

President affirmed readiness of Ukrainian side to immediately begin talks on transparent and reliable procedure of Russian gas transit to Europe.
