Oleksandr Turchynov says crew error caused Mi-8 helicopter crash in Black Sea

A human factor was a cause of the Mi-8 helicopter crash in the Black Sea on April 28, Ukrainian First Vice Premier Oleksandr Turchynov said, citing the results of analysis of the helicopter's flight recorders.

"We have deciphered the flight recorders. There were no technical malfunctions in the helicopter's operation. Unprofessional actions of the crew became the cause of the accident," he said.

Ukrainian Transport Minister Yosyp Vinsky also confirmed the statement made by Oleksandr Turchynov.

The Mi-8 helicopter, which was owned by the Crimean state aircraft enterprise Universal-Avia, was flying to the Tavryda drilling rig 70 kilometers of the coast. When approaching, the helicopter caught with its rear rotor on the drilling rig's fence system and fell on the area, a fuel tank exploded right after the crash. Twenty people, including three crew and 17 workers of the state joint-stock company Chornomornaftogaz, were killed in the crash.
