President sets deadline for compromise

President Victor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych have agreed that a group set up last week to craft bills for holding early parliamentary elections should propose their package by May 16.

Ukraine’s newly appointed secretary of the National Security Council, Ivan Plyushch, who was present at today’s meeting between Yushchenko and Yanukovych, later told reporters, “These bills – the most important of them being a parliamentary resolution to ensure that the snap poll is organized and conducted properly – will enable the president to make his final decision,” he said, adding that the group would then compromise on a new election date.

Plyushch said Yushchenko believed the group was inefficient and described today’s meeting as a “weekly report and plan for the next few days.”
